Technology is adapted to render it unpredictable, such as randomized phaser settings. Hanson's communications are cut, the war must be going badly. To avoid musical chairs, Borg expert Lieutenant Commander Elizabeth Paula Shelby is acting XO. Locutus refuses to come to terms, separation and fire are engaged, including anti-matter spread. Data and Dorn beam into the Borg ship, overpower and get Locutus into a shuttle and beam aboard before it's shot down. If Crusher can awake Picard, he may now have decisive Borg info, but meanwhile declares himself Borg spokesman. While earth's own solar system is being invaded, Data finds out Borg mind coordination happens over frequencies; Crusher and Data try to access both man and machine, using a neuro-link to Data, still links aren't severed despite Picard reaching out, which teaches them the Borg cannot disconnect a member, Data hopes to reverse control...

They take on the challenge to collaborate and learn to know each-other better, but when Gordi shows her his hologram version of her, Brahms feels almost pornographically 'abused', one prejudiced insult too many for him. Meanwhile Picard, his bridge officers and Dr. Crusher have a very different problem, a strange life form which approaches, but dies, however is found to have 'given birth' to a baby version inside its corps, which must be separated to stand a chance of survival and contact with the Federation. When that succeeds, 'junior' instinctively identifies the Enterprise as its mother, and locks on, draining energy trough the hull, which is only safely sustainable for a few hours; only after Gordi and Brahms join the bridge, its relevant normal mode of life in an asteroid field is revealed and the duo comes up with an idea...

While the Enterprise tows the Britain to the nearest star-base, its own crewmen starts sensing another presence and experiencing rising fear, plausibly working up to dangerous paranoia. The ship itself gets stuck in a rift in space; Data finds the Britain tried to escape from the same with a blast, the technicians have a hard time finding a better alternative, at Picard's request with (fear-immune android) Data temporarily in command. Meanwhile Dr. Crusher gets nightmarish hallucinations herself but concludes from a chemical imbalance that all the humans have stopped getting REM sleep and therefore dreams (only Betazoids Troi and the survivor have nightmares), which is driving them insane, Worf is the first to nearly commit suicide. Then Troi finds her vision of eyes in the dark is identical to the surviving ensign Peeples's, not a nightmare but a message from other victims; she hopes to communicate with them by 'directed dreaming'...
