The Enterprise picks up ancient radio signal code from the ruined planet Aurelius 9, remnant of the total war over 1,000 years ago between Mentaurs and Promelians which caused both races' extinction. They find a Promelian battle-cruiser still floats in an asteroid field, so Picard, Data and Lieutenant Worf beam inside, finding a message from the captain he alone takes blame for all casualties. Barely back on board, they learn the Enterprise is immobilized by an energy-draining radiation field, the very booby trap that killed the Promelian ship's crew, which will within hours destroy the deflector shields, after which casualties will be massive. While running urgent simulations of the Enterprise's engine abilities on the holodeck, Lieutenant Commander Geordi LaForge, who recently saw his meticulously prepared dream-date fall trough, finds himself unusually taken with a holographic simulacrum of the late Dr. Leah Brahms, the Enterprise's engine designer. Data restores other bits from the wreck's captain's recordings, enough to guess how the energy-drain works, but the possible counter-move holds big risks, indeed makes it worse- is timing the key, as rapid as only a computer-simulated entity manages?

However the real Brahms proves icy and arrogantly unwilling to consider any of Gordi's empirical findings could conceivably stand against her theoretically impermeable truth. They take on the challenge to collaborate and learn to know each-other better, but when Gordi shows her his hologram version of her, Brahms feels almost pornographically 'abused', one prejudiced insult too many for him. Meanwhile Picard, his bridge officers and Dr. Crusher have a very different problem, a strange life form which approaches, but dies, however is found to have 'given birth' to a baby version inside its corps, which must be separated to stand a chance of survival and contact with the Federation. When that succeeds, 'junior' instinctively identifies the Enterprise as its mother, and locks on, draining energy trough the hull, which is only safely sustainable for a few hours; only after Gordi and Brahms join the bridge, its relevant normal mode of life in an asteroid field is revealed and the duo comes up with an idea...

Picard is stripped naked and suspended by the wrists for a thirsty night before torture by a pain-inducing implant made with a geminite knife. The Cardassians prove to Jellico that Picard is captured but deny the spy POW status, so he'll suffer a terrorist's fate unless the Federation admits starting a war or retreats from the sector. After scanning the Cardassian ship for indications where they were Jellico, Data and Gordi guess right Picard was tricked to betray the Federation defense plans for Minos Kordas and get permission to make a bold counter-move, requiring best pilot Riker, who openly disapproves of Jellico's cold style and attitude. To Picard's astonishment, Moriarty proves empirically his will suffices to leave the Holodeck, he even retains a physical body. Picard grants him the benefit of the doubt despite his crimes in fiction, but refuses to grant life to the countess Barthalomew, who was created as his ideal but holographic mate. That still leaves the technological challenge, but Data's logical deduction comes up with an entirely different viewpoint, inspiring another challenge and approach...

Picard, LaForge, Data and Troi return from a sadly boring scientific conference to the Enterprise. They experience weird instances where either one or several of them are perceived to seem frozen in time by the other(s), although both biometrics and technical shuttle diagnostics check out perfectly normal. It soon turns out there is a whole spray of tiny local occurrences of time-space-continuum distortions, most worrying in a pattern pointing at the Enterprise, which they find frozen as well as a Romulan war-bird, which seems to be frozen during an invasion, but once they find a way to get aboard without being sucked-in that appears fake. The source of the distortions is an organism, from another continuum.
